Resources for Ostomates

This is a reposting of an older blog I wrote. I thought it was a good time to share again in light of a recent question I received from a blog reader.
I was in a conversation recently with a new Facebook friend, Donna, which made we think it was time to revisit the top of resources of the un-insured or under-insured. She shared with me that she was able to get ostomy resources from Banner Home Care.
She called Banner Home Care and asked them if there was anyway they could bill her for the supplies. The gal she talked to said that wasn’t a problem. Then she said she’d send an application for financial assistance and faxed it to her. Donna filled it out and faxed it back and in the meantime my supplies arrived. A few days later she received a letter in the mail saying that she qualified for 100% financial assistance and would be getting all of my supplies for free. She had to let them know when and if her insurance situation changes, but for now, she can get supplies free for an entire year.
Suggestions for contacting Banner Health: As for the financial form, the patient would have to ask for one from their specific Banner Home Care/Banner Hospice located where they are. At the bottom of the web page there is a ‘Contact Banner’ link. There are different contact numbers for all of the different states Banner Health covers. If someone is in Phoenix, AZ is looking for what Donna discovered, the telephone number in Gilbert, AZ is: 480-657-1000. She suggests that you (the patient) tell whomever is answering the phone exactly what your situation is, whether you are uninsured or underinsured and are needing ostomy supplies and would like to apply for financial assistance. She also said the employees seemed genuinely caring and concerned and will do everything in their power to help a person out as best they can.
I also recently received an update from my friends at non-profit organization, The Wholeness House/Osto Group Ladies  “I just want to thank you for all the donations that are coming to us by way of your outreach.  We have increased tremendously in shipments and I know God is using you to assist us in this fashion.~Marian”

A HAND UP NOT A HAND OUT FOR OSTOMY PATIENTS’ NATIONWIDE Often treatment of colorectal cancer will warrant a temporary or permanent colostomy/ileostomy (an ostomy is a surgical opening to the intestines) which requires a wide range of medical supplies. Ostomy supplies are not a choice; you can’t live without them and the monthly expenses are in the hundreds. With the difficult state of the economy and many people facing job loss and lack of insurance it makes me wonder how ostomy patients are purchasing their supplies. Thanks to this wonderful group of women running the ‘Osto Group’ a non-profit organization that offers ostomy supplies to patients nationwide for those who do not have medical insurance or their insurance doesn’t cover their supplies. One person shared, “When we lost insurance coverage, we felt we were lost. Also, there isn’t an extra $200/mo. in our budget. I haven’t been able to find any meaningful employment for more than 12 months. These unfortunate ones actually use common household supplies and tape in place of ostomy supplies! That sounds bad, doesn’t it? Well this is reality for some”. (Summarized from a testimonial letter written to Osto Group).

Call to Action: Ostomy Products for the Uninsured (Because Ostomy Supplies are a necessity for living not a luxury)

This is a post I wrote a while back. I’d like to repost this important message today to advocate for prevention of colon cancer and to bring awareness about an organization that is giving back to others in a big way. Thanks to all the ladies at non-profit organization OstoGroup.

Why would you want to respond to this call to action?

Because Ostomy Supplies are a necessity for living not a luxury.

Osto Group Mission: To meet the needs of those who have fallen on hard times by providing them with quality supplies and the necessities for living. Call to Action for Ileostomates: Share Nutrition and Recipe Tips (If not us, then who?)

Let’s Partner Together to Share Nutrition and Recipe Tips

Hi Friends,

Some of my more popular blog posts have been on the topic of Ileostomy nutrition (Ileostomy Nutrition: What can I eat after my surgery? and Having an Ileostomy and dealing with ER visits resulting from dehydration

I received an e-mail recently, from a new ostomate, seeking feedback from fellow ostomates on nutrition, recipes and wellness tips that work well for them based on personal experience. Because my blog posts on the topic of ileostomy nutrition have received positive feedback, I thought it was a wonderful idea to try and solicit the input of other ostomates to develop a collaborative blog post on this subject.

When you see a ‘Call to Action’ that is inspiring and/or thought provoking, how do you respond? If you’re anything like me, your inspired and feel a sense of urgency that something must be done. You might say to yourself that someone with more education, ability, expertise, experience and connections will be the likely candidate to take action. I often wonder what qualifies me to write, inform and inspire others. After all, many others, like me, have encountered cancer and have had several surgeries, radiation/chemo and have even encountered post-treatment side effects and live. What is it that qualifies me?

If not us, then who?

Every significant vision, product or concept first starts with a need, spurred by a desire that is initiated and finally ignited by an individual’s response.

The famous quote from nobel laureate, Sir Alexander Fleming. “One sometimes finds what one is not looking for”.

His research during his military stint inspired him to develop a natural antispectic enzyme which years later led him to stumble on the discovery of penicillin. The need to treat bacteria infections, followed by his persistence and intelligence led to one of the great discoveries in science and medicine. What if he wasn’t persistant in  his research?

Statistically, I’m not educated, connected or experienced enough to make an impact that creates change and hope. However, what I do offer is a willingness to respond, a desire to help, and my personal experiences and that, to many, speaks volumes. Some observers might say you’re unlikely to have a significant impact, but you’re living a legacy anyway!

It brings to mind Amos, a farmer and prophet from a small town outside of Jerusalem, was an unlikely choice for a spokesman for the Gospel. Amos didn’t measure up by any means according to the qualifications expected to carry during those times; not only was he a blue-collar worker, but he wasn’t the son of a prophet which is usually the case.

So what should we say qualifies us? Chuck Swindoll said it well, the Power of God is the only clout you need!

How can you help? Share your ileostomy friendly nutrition tips, recipes and restrictions list.

Your Story: What’s changed your life (milestones, health, spiritual, family)?

Dear Friends,

Once again thank you for stopping by! Today I’m writing to all of you to ask for ‘your stories’. I am so blessed to have this opportunity through the Chat with Dee Dee blog to get to know so many new people and slowly develop acquaintanceship(s) along the way.

When I started my blog in 2010 my first vision was to share my cancer survivor story and things I’ve learned along the way. What I never anticipated was how God would use this blog as a format for others to share their stories and to give me so many opportunities to learn and grow.

I have had some of the most amazing guest blog posts and as a result I’ve been so fortunate to share a variety of topics with my blog, Facebook and Twitter readers:

As many of you know from corresponding with me or from reading my disclaimer, I’m in the process of writing a book. I’m using ‘my stories’, ‘your stories’ and sharing other helpful information and tools I learn about along the way that impact ‘our lives’.

So now I’m writing to you once again to ask for your inspirational stories. If you’re like many of the people who have written or spoken with me, you’re probably thinking to yourself but I don’t have anything to share. Well your wrong, we all have a story our life experiences though familiar to us are new, inspirational and so very helpful to others.

Write now some of you are experiencing or have experienced a life changing event whether medical, financial, relationship or spiritual it’s your story and it’s so valuable. I get so excited when I am blessed to hear from others and learn about your journey and how you’ve conquered and learned to overcome or live joyfully despite the circumstances life brings our way.

Romans 8:7  No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.

I would be honored to hear from you. It is my desire through my blog and outreach ministry to share my survival story to help others and a great part of my ministry and possibly the most rewarding is meeting others and hearing their story and learning tips and advice from others. I know we can collectively learn and benefit from each other.

Please send me an e-mail and share your story and/or comments or question email: Dee Dee (Click Here).
